WhatsApp Introduces Ads and Subscriptions to Updates Tab
Meta has announced a significant update to WhatsApp's Updates tab, introducing channel subscriptions, promoted channels, and ads. With 1.5 billion daily users, the Updates tab is an ideal platform for experimentation.
Three New Features:
1. *Channel Subscriptions*: Users can support their favorite brands or channels by subscribing to receive exclusive updates for a monthly fee.
2. Promoted Channels: Channel admins can increase visibility and reach new users through promoted channels.
3. Ads in Status: Businesses can promote products and services in the Updates tab, allowing users to start conversations with them.
Data Usage:
To display ads, Meta will use user data, including:
- Country, city, and language
- Channels followed
- Ad interaction history
- Ad preferences (for users who have added WhatsApp to Meta's Accounts Center)
Privacy Concerns:
Austrian privacy organization Noyb has raised concerns about Meta's announcement, citing potential GDPR and DMA violations. Chairman Max Schrems argues that Meta's approach to data linking and tracking is "clearly illegal" without genuine user consent.
Rollout:
Ads in the Updates tab will be rolled out over the next few months, with personal messages, calls, and statuses remaining end-to-end encrypted. Meta assures users that their phone numbers will not be shared with advertisers.
This update aims to provide a new revenue stream for Meta while offering users more ways to engage with their favorite brands and channels. However, the move has sparked controversy over data privacy and user consent.
