Google has officially revealed its new smart glasses, marking the company’s return to wearable tech after the failure of Google Glass more than a decade ago. The announcement was made on May 19 during the Google I/O developer conference in Mountain View, California.
The upcoming smart glasses, expected to launch in 2026, are designed to compete directly with Meta’s successful Ray-Ban smart glasses, which have already sold millions worldwide.
Google’s new “audio glasses” will feature a built-in microphone, camera, and speakers, allowing users to make calls, listen to music, take photos, and interact with the Gemini AI assistant hands-free.
The tech giant introduced two stylish collections created in partnership with popular eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, while Samsung handled the technical development. The glasses will work with both Android and Apple smartphones.
Google previously struggled in the smart glasses market with the release of Google Glass in 2013, a product that faced backlash over privacy and surveillance concerns due to its integrated camera. This time, however, the company is focusing heavily on fashion, comfort, and AI-powered features to attract modern consumers.
In addition to the audio-focused glasses, Google also confirmed it is developing another version with a built-in display, similar to Meta’s latest smart glasses released in 2025. The display-equipped model is currently undergoing advanced developer testing.
Despite the innovation, privacy concerns are expected to resurface, especially regarding the use of built-in cameras in public spaces.
The launch signals Google’s renewed ambition in the wearable AI market as competition intensifies between major tech companies including Google, Meta, and Samsung.
